SUMMER ASSOCIATES

Unpaid Summer Associate positions at VLA are available to all law students from an accredited U.S. law school. To apply please send a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript and names of three references to the attention of Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq., Associate Director.
Please note that preference is given to applicants who are available for in-person interviews, and to applicants who hold a GPA of 3.25 or higher. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2012.
Please note that we do not accomodate split summers. Our Summer Associate program runs for 10-weeks, from late May until early August, and we do not accomodate tenures less than 10-weeks.

VLA FALL AND SPRING LEGAL INTERNSHIPS
Unpaid Spring 2013 Internship
Start Date: January 2013

VLA seeks a spring term interns to work closely with the Associate Director on administrative and educational aspects of our programming, particularly the Art & Law Residency Program. Our Spring Internship Program requires a full semester commitment (approximately 15-weeks), with approx. 20-25 hours per week.
Students are highly encouraged to seek alternate funding as this internship is unpaid. Arrangements may also be made with the student's school for work/study stipends, and/or for accreditation. All arrangements regarding accreditation or pay must be handled by the student/intern.
This is a great opportunity for artists and/or students interested in pursuing law school or a career in nonprofit arts organizations.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with Associate Director, including:
* Handling Art & Law Residency educational materials;
* Contacting Art & Law Residency seminar leaders, artists, curators, and writers;
* Responding to e-mails and phone calls;
* Photocopying;
* Participating in some meetings and conference calls;
* Conducting research and writing;
* Drafting letters;
* Other projects as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
All students from accredited institutions are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must possess:
* A love for art;
* A demonstrated interest in helping artists and arts organizations;
* A demonstrated interest in art law, fashion law, entertainment law;
* Excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills;
* Excellent knowledge of InDesign and Dreamweaver preferred;
* Initiative and determination to see projects through to completion.

Deferred Associate Attorney Position 2012-2013
Start Date: August 2012
Deferred Associate Attorney: Participate in advising and representing low-income artists and arts organizations, educational programs and advocacy matters. Analyze and interpret legal issues relating to intellectual property, agreements, and legal entities. Draft and negotiate agreements between band members, artists and arts organizations, non-profit and for-profit corporations, and limited liability company agreements. Review and analyze legal documents pertaining to individual artist projects as well as for-profit and non-profit corporate matters. Draft legal memoranda, and coordinate the development of law-related strategies for clients. Participate in educational programming and advocacy matters. Lead client interviews and counseling.
Position requires a J.D. with top-tier academic credentials and 1-4 years experience representing clients with arts and entertainment issues, with special emphasis in intellectual property, corporate entities, and agreements. Applicant must have excellent computer skills, interpersonal skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
Applicant must be eligible to receive deferred compensation from her/his hiring law firm. Must be admitted to New York State Bar.
