New Volunteer Attorney Orientation

To volunteer at our clinics or take a case from our case list, VLA requires that attorneys attend a short orientation. At the orientation, important information about VLA's programs, requirements for volunteers and our administrative procedures will be covered.

MediateArt’s Training Program: Winter 2012

MediateArt™ is VLA's alternative dispute resolution, contract negotiation, and negotiation counseling department. A vital program of VLA's since 1998, MediateArt offers members of the arts community an alternative, non-litigious way in which to resolve their disputes. This season, VLA is offering a two-day intensive workshop of basic mediation training for attorneys, artists, arts administrators, and other professionals with an interest or background in the arts or in intellectual property. The workshop will cover basic mediation, negotiation, and facilitative leadership skills with a focus on the resolution of disputes without litigation. Participants will learn and practice effective mediation skills and will receive one-on-one feedback from experienced mediators.

Nonprofit Incorporation and Tax Exemption Workshop

Where: VLA Auditorium, 1 East 53rd Street, NY, NY 10022*3.0 CLE credits, 2 Professional Practice and 1 Skills (Approved for Non-Transitional and Transitional Attorneys)
This workshop provides valuable information about starting a nonprofit organization. State issues to be covered include articles of incorporation, bylaws, and the first organization meeting. Federal issues include the Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and corresponding regulations, application for employer identification number, IRS disclosure rules, unrelated business taxable income, charitable contributions, and restrictions on lobbying. This workshop will also touch on the legal and ethical duties for board members; donor requirements; the new Form 990; intellectual property issues specific to nonprofit tax-exempt organizations; insurance; and employment issues. The Fiscal Sponsorship model will be addressed as an alternative to forming a non-profit organization.

This workshop includes a private tour of the exhibition Joaquin Sorolla and the Glory of Spanish Dress at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute. The tour will take place at noon on Friday, January 20, 2012, only for attendees registered for this workshop. More details below.

This workshop addresses the common issues and many differences between film and fashion from the perspective of those seeking to represent and counsel artists in those fields. Artist working in those fields may also benefit from the class as it will provide an overview of the legal and business issues. Topics will include considerations in business organization and financing, and the creation, distribution and protection of business assets; industry-specific issues related to intellectual property; and common contracts for filmmakers/producers and artists working in fashion, apparel and design, modeling, photography and jewelry.

Navigating the NY Small Claims Court System
When: Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 6 - 8pm
Where: VLA Auditorium, 1 East 53rd Street, NY, NY 10022Many disputes involve monetary disputes of less than $5,000, and thus may not warrant the cost of retaining an attorney. This workshop will discuss how artists can resolve these claims without the use of an attorney. Issues covered will include: what sort of claims can be heard in the New York Small Claims Court System, how to start an action, what proof is required by courts, how to obtain a judgment, and what to do with the judgment after you won. The workshop will also cover; how to defend a small claims action, vacating a default judgment entered against you, motion practice, the option to arbitrate and ways to protect yourself by memorializing your agreement in writing.
