VLA also teaches private CLE classes. Recently, VLA has taught private CLE classes on the topic of Nonprofit Incorporation and Tax Exemption at the law firms of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, Proskauer Rose LLP, Skadden Arps LLP, and King & Spalding LLP. Under this new program, VLA selected a group of pro bono nonprofit incorporation cases for the firms to consider and trained the attending attorneys to handle those cases. Beyond technical training, this program is an unique opportunity for both VLA and the participating attorneys to meet face-to-face and to talk about specific legal and business issues related to the cases under review—for example, fundraising, assisting the new nonprofits with gathering information about the marketplace in which they will operate, and helping the nonprofits to learn to work with counsel. In addition, the classes resulted in both host firms accepting additional pro bono representations.
