Job Openings:Deferred Associate Attorney Position 2010-2011
Start Date: Immediately
Deferred Associate Attorney: Participate in advising and representing low-income artists and arts organizations, educational programs and advocacy matters.
Analyze and interpret legal issues relating to intellectual property, agreements, and legal entities. Draft and negotiate agreements between band members, artists and arts organizations, non-profit and for-profit corporations, and limited liability company agreements. Review and analyze legal documents pertaining to individual artist projects as well as for-profit and non-profit corporate matters. Draft legal memoranda, and coordinate the development of law-related strategies for clients. Participate in educational programming and advocacy matters.
Lead client interviews and counseling. Position requires a J.D. with top-tier academic credentials and 1-4 years experience representing clients with arts and entertainment issues, with special emphasis in intellectual property, corporate entities, and agreements. Applicant must have excellent computer skills, interpersonal skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
Applicant must be eligible to receive deferred compensation from her/his hiring law firm. Must be admitted to New York State Bar.

School Year Internships
Internships during the school year are available to law students from Columbia Law School, Brooklyn Law School, Cornell Law School, New York Law School, Harvard Law School and Yale Law School.
If you do not attend a law school listed above and would like to intern at VLA during the school year (fall and/or spring semester), have an authorized representative (such as a dean, career counselor, or clinical program director) from your school contact VLA's Associate Director, Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq., at 212.319.2787 x13, to discuss creating a formal relationship with VLA.
Summer Associates
VLA is now accepting applications for its 2011 Summer Associate Program. Unpaid Summer Associate positions at VLA are available to all law students from an accredited law school. To apply please send a cover letter, resume, and names of three references to the attention of Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, Esq., Associate Director. Please note that preference is given to applicants who are available for in-person interviews. There is no deadline, but applications received by November 30, 2010 are highly encouraged, as we usually decide on our Summer Associate class by the end of December.
Attorneys and Recent Law School Graduates
Attorneys and recent law school graduates who are interested in volunteering for VLA must be admitted for at least 3 years, in good standing, have malpractice insurance, and attend one of our monthly Volunteer Orientations, among other requirements. Please contact Ben Brandow for more information.
