The VLA Legal Clinic

VLA's Legal Clinics are an opportunity for VLA client members to seek advice on their arts-related legal issues in a private one-on-one appointment with one of our volunteer attorneys. VLA clients must be existing VLA members (or can register as a member by phone in advance of a clinic) in order to attend a Clinic.

To schedule a Clinic appointment or register as a member, please call 212·319·ARTS (2787), ext.1. VLA's Legal Clinics are scheduled on a rolling basis and are generally offered every two to four weeks at our law firm members' offices around Manhattan. Clinics are usually held on Wednesday afternoons between 2-5pm or 3-6pm but are occasionally held other days of the week.

Clinic appointments are always free for VLA members and are generally up to 45 or 50 minutes in length.

More VLA Legal Clinic Details

In March 2001, VLA launched the VLA Legal Clinic, a program facilitating in-person consultations by volunteer attorneys for members of the arts community. The clinics enable VLA members to receive a free consultation with a volunteer attorney on any arts-related legal issue.

The Clinic is a valuable source of business and economic development information for artists and resolves the matter at hand in about 75% of cases. Over the past several years, VLA has expanded the Legal Clinic program by offering additional clinics sponsored and staffed by a single firm, company, or organization. For example, volunteers from the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Committee of the New York State Bar Association have staffed a number of clinics. Law firms such as Shearman & Sterling LLP, Proskauer Rose LLP, Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, Seyfarth Shaw LLP, and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP have also sponsored and staffed VLA clinics during the past fiscal year.

VLA's Legal Clinic program is managed by VLA's Director of Legal Services. The ability to arrange a Firm-Sponsored VLA Clinic is open to VLA's Corporate Members only. Please contact us to discuss arranging a firm sponsored clinic, at 212.319.2787 x14.
