The Exonerated Project

Begun in January 2006, VLA created this project to serve individuals exonerated from wrongful convictions through The Innocence Project at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. VLA’s Exonerated Project offers VLA’s signature services free of charge to this community for any arts-related issues and opportunities that they  may face.  For example, VLA will seek pro bono representation for an individual in connection with a book or film project offer related to their lives and exoneration.

The Innocence Project was founded by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld in 1992, is a non-profit legal clinic and criminal justice resource center. The clinic and center works to exonerate the wrongfully convicted through postconviction DNA testing; and develops and implements reforms to prevent wrongful convictions. This Project only handles cases where postconviction DNA testing can yield conclusive proof of innocence.

VLA invites all artists and arts organizations interested in accessing our services, and attorneys interested in volunteering with The Exonerated Project to contact VLA Director of Legal Services, Alexei Auld, Esq. at 212·319·ARTS (2787), ext. 12.
